Are You Trying to Lose Weight?

Do you remember the sheer joy of basking in a sunny spot as a young child...

Running downhill, one foot pounding after the other almost faster than you could keep up with...

Eating juicy berries right off the vine...

Enjoying being in your body, without any judgment of what you "should" do, eat, or look like?

The Best Weigh is a special new coaching course full of incredible tools designed to bring you back to that childhood paradise of a healthy, delightful relationship with food and your body. Do you remember that peace and joy? I took it for granted, figured that was how things were supposed to be. Funny thing - as I grew up I took the shame, judgment, and pressure of adulthood, to look and eat and be a certain way, just as much for granted!

The messages we get about our bodies every day are cunning, baffling, and powerful.

We're taught to recoil from fat. But natural, unhydrogenated fats are both delicious and good for us. Our brains are 60% fat! Natural fats actually increase your metabolism, boost your immune system, and improve your digestion. Fat is so important to our bodies that it's what sends that signal that it's okay to stop eating. Our bodies don't stop seeking food when we eat carbs, or protein - it's the fat.

We're taught that our bodies aren't beautiful enough or good enough. Can't make millions selling people weight-loss products if they love their bodies and are happy with themselves, can you? People spend $40 billion a year on weight-loss products in the United States alone.

We're taught that our fat is our fault. When I looked up that statistic about the weight-loss industry, I read this line about diet products: "'When you look at the need, that 60 percent of us are overweight, the opportunities are enormous,' says Anna Silberman, CEO of Lifestyle Advantage...." (Pun intended?) But it's not that the diet industry benefits from people's weight. It actually causes people to gain weight. After temporary weight loss, dieting causes weight gain. And then we're told that it's our fault that we didn't lose weight!

We're taught to obsess about food. And there's a constant battle between different pseudoscientific food theories. Magazines, especially, are full of lightweight articles that devote maybe a paragraph to whatever the current nutritional fad is. They push low-fat recipes in issue after issue, tell you to substitute margarine (that notorious trans fat) for butter to keep it "lite", tell you all kinds of ways to cut calories (order from the children's menu! drink water when you're hungry! never snack! always snack! snack, but only on 100-calorie packs of carrot sticks!) without giving any consideration to nutrition, studies, or how much our bodies vary. Their assumption is that everyone wants to, and should, lose weight. Of course, each of those articles and recipes is surrounded by ads full of airbrushed size 0 models.... But that's probably just a coincidence.

We're taught to seek answers outside ourselves. Pills, diets, exercise routines, always some crazy plan to make you lose weight. (Whether you need to or not. No matter what your body type actually needs to be healthy.) Forever! (As long as you keep on using whatever they sell you. If it even worked in the first place.) The name of the game is "one size fits all" - we're all supposed to try to be the same size, eat the same way, and lose weight the same way to get there. Meanwhile, we get more and more out of touch with our bodies, and have more and more health issues. And many of us are then told that all our health issues are because we're "fat" or "overweight"!

There Is A Better Weigh!

There is a "better weigh" to look at food and your body. I believe:

That we can enjoy being in our bodies at any size.

That we can be healthy and live in healthy ways at any size.

That it is vitally important to be happy in our bodies.

That the more we listen to our bodies, the more connected we become with our intuition, and the better our whole lives become.

That discovering what size is healthy for each of our individual bodies is a wonderful and often surprising adventure, and one that it's very hard to undertake alone!

I want each of us to return to the childlike peace and joy that is our birthright. I want each of us to enjoy what our bodies can do - to have fun in them again. I want each of us to be able to enjoy food, eat things that we delight in, with a solid understanding of what foods are wonderful and delightful for our bodies too. To be able to show our love and care for our bodies through food, instead of feeling shame and guilt around eating.

That's Why I Call It The Best Weigh

When I was developing this coaching course, I checked out what other people were doing to help people who wanted to lose weight. Some of them were pretty good; they had good nutritional information, great emotional support, actual tools for you to use. But some of them were insane! There was one guy whose every email started with a statement about how the reader was overweight (how does HE know?) and tried to freak everyone out about how they were about to have a heart attack or how sugar was the silent fat-maker that had already crawled under their skin. Is it a coaching email or a horror movie?

My very favorite one, though, built up to this huge trump card of an argument, an argument that was clearly supposed to tip ANYONE over the edge. The argument? Are you ready for this? The enormous, last word, big selling point? "Getting slim allows you to wear more attractive (and better fitting) clothes right now..........and that feeling is very worthwhile."

Are they freaking kidding us with this stuff?!

You CAN wear more attractive, better fitting clothes RIGHT NOW - without changing anything about yourself! In fact, there's a whole portion of my program dedicated to exploring what styles we each love, what looks best on each of us, how to wear clothes that delight you, where to FIND the clothes that delight you.... It has nothing to do with size. Everyone has clothes that they would love to wear that don't look right on their body type, and everyone can find out how to take the elements they love about those clothes and find outfits with those elements that actually look fantastic on them.

And: wearing attractive clothes is not a feeling. Feeling great about yourself, loving yourself, enjoying your life, taking joy from how you look - those are feelings. But just as fat is not a feeling, wearing different clothes isn't either.

The bottom line is that you don't need to lose weight before you love your body, the way it feels, the way it looks. Losing weight is not a prerequisite for any of those things.

Some of you reading this are probably certain that you need to lose weight. Maybe your doctor told you so, or you think it will help you with a health problem you have, or you have just noticed that your clothes don't fit right anymore. Maybe you think it will make you healthier or more attractive or better at sports. That's okay too. You can lose weight if you want to!
